Selling original Bayer Contour test strips
The original Contour line is the older of the two Contour strip systems, and it is still bought. Plenty of people assume a Bayer-branded box is too old to be worth anything now that the brand has moved to Ascensia and the Next line has taken over. That is not the case, and boxes get thrown away every week on that assumption.
Contour is not Contour Next
This is the single most common mix-up in this family. The strips are not interchangeable and the meters will not accept the wrong one. Look at the box: if the word Next appears after Contour, it belongs on the Contour Next listings, not here. If it just says Contour, you are in the right place.
The reference number settles it if the printing is worn. Original Contour 50 counts carry reference 7080G. Contour Next uses the 73-series instead.
Counts, including the unusual 25
Original Contour appears in retail 50 and 100 counts, and in non-retail 25 and 50 counts. The 25 count non-retail box is the one people overlook — it is small, it looks like a sample, and it gets binned. It is a listed product with its own value.
Quote from the number printed on the box rather than from box size. Small boxes are not automatically low counts and large boxes are not automatically high ones.
Retail and mail order boxes
Retail boxes came from a pharmacy shelf. Mail order and non-retail boxes came from a supplier or benefit manager, and are typically plainer, sometimes marked as not for retail sale. Both are bought, and both are quoted separately above, because they do not carry the same value onward.
Control solution and Microlet lancets
The Contour family also includes items that are not strips at all. Contour control solution — the small bottle used to verify a meter and strip lot are reading correctly — is bought, and is routinely thrown out by people who do not realise it has value. Bayer Microlet lancets are bought as well, with their own expiration requirement.
If you are clearing out a supply cupboard, pull these out alongside the strips rather than assuming only the strip boxes count.
Shelf life
Because this is the older line, expiration dates on original Contour stock tend to sit closer in than they do on Next boxes. That makes checking the date the first thing to do, not the last. We express our requirements in months of remaining life rather than a fixed calendar date, because the windows we buy in change from time to time. The listings above are always current — read the requirement there and compare it to your box.
Condition
Factory sealed, unopened, no writing, no torn label residue, no water damage, no crushing. An opened box cannot be resold and cannot be quoted, even when the vials inside are untouched.
